Second Grade Bake Sale- Friday, May 3rd
To end our product development unit the second grade will have their own bake sale. Our goal is for students to experience how products are made and sold. Each year the kids look forward to this exciting bake sale, where they can watch people buy and enjoy a baked good product they created.
For this bake sale to be a success we depend on your help at home. The students have worked hard to design a baked good based on what their consumer (the Lower School) wants. Please help them stick to this plan as much as possible, again we want students to experience making their own unique product. We do not want this to be a "mom project" so please let your child be active in the baking process and in buying ingredients.
For the bake sale we ask that each child bring in either 2 dozen cookies, a loaf of bread, 12 cupcakes, or 1 cake, depending on what their product is. Students will need to bring in their product Friday (May 3rd) morning to the cafeteria. We will have a special table set up in the back for students to leave their baked goods on. Please be sure your child's name is on any plates or containers that you may bring to school, so we can be sure it goes home with them at the end of the day.
The actual bake sale will take place at 1:00pm - 1:30pm in the back of the cafeteria on May 3rd. We hope to see you there!
Half of the proceeds from this bake sale will go to our end of the year second grade party. The other half will be doanted to the Aeta Village, where students will choose a UNICEF gift to give.
Should you have any questions, please don't hesitate to text or drop by.
Again we send you all a BIG THANKS for your cooperation and hard work at home!

What's Happening This April!
Welcome Back! We hope everyone had a restful break!
It’s incredible to believe that in just TWO months the second grade will come to a close and that your child will begin their adventures towards third grade.
Please review this month’s calendar to keep up with important dates. We have many fun upcoming events. We suggest printing off the calendar and posting it in the house.
LANGUAGE ARTS
This month we begin Persuasive Writing in Reader and Writer’s workshop. Students will work on forming an opinion and trying to convince others to follow their opinion. We’ll be looking at book reviews, silly stories, persuasive letters, and advertisement. Be on the look out as your children may actively be trying their persuasion skills on you at home.
Math
In math we started the month off with probability. On Friday, April 12th your child will help create a probability carnival for the first grade. They will create different carnival games using what they know on probability. After probability we begin introducing students to multiplication. In second grade are main goal is for students to understand what multiplication is, so by third grade they can begin to memorize facts for quick use. To do this we will be using lots of songs and games so students can be familiar with the different number facts.
Social Studies
In Social Studies we have begun product development. Students will be learning how different goods are made and about different services. Our big project for this unit is the grade two bake sale. For this students will design a cookie, based on survey’s of what lower school students would want in their cookie. Then they will create new cookie to sell at our bake sale. This will begin the last two week of April, we really appreciate your help and cooperation in this final project.
As well we will have a field trip on April 18th to show students goods and services in action around the community.
Looking forward to a great month!

Dino Unit Launch !
Secondgraders measure actual sizes of their dino friends!
If you have been hearing words like "paleontologist" or "t-rex" or "stegosaurus" for the past few days, don't be surprised! The most awaited unit in second grade has already been launched this week ! Welcome to the world of Dinosaurs! For the next 4 weeks, the secondgraders will become paleontologists as they learn and discover more facts about the mysterious Mesozoic Era ! Watch out for big, exciting projects, dino pets and some outdoor digging in the days to come. Meanwhile, we ask that parents support their child's learning at home. Read with them, look at photos, watch videos or take them to interesting virtual or actual museum trips ! Keep them interested, engaged and independent at all times ! The Dino page is up and running so go ahead and explore the site!
UNICEF Training & Aeta Village Fieldtrip
What an amazing journey it has been for our little UNICEF agents ! Our goal for this unit was for them to understand that all children around the world have the same NEEDS like water, shelter, education, food, health &safety but not every child has the opportunity to have them. We introduced UNICEF as an organization whose mission is to give children around the world a chance in life to get what they need to survive. In this unit, the kids underwent KID AGENT TRAINING wherein they simulated the different problems kids around the world face and then created solutions for them. One great training session was when we discussed about how children in Laos had trouble getting water so they had to carry water buckets on their shoulders – our little agents simulated this situation by also carrying water buckets on their shoulders and afterwards reflected on the problem then created wonderful solutions on their journal passports.
After 5 simulations, they were ready for their final agent TASK - which was to investigate the Aeta Village Community in Pastolan Village. On their visit, they checked, as agents, if the children in the community had everything they need in order to survive. They looked at their water source, food, education (they had so much fun being in class with the Aeta kids!), play (another AWESOME experience!), and shelter. It was an eye opening experience for many of our agents who selflessly and humbly took part in the community immersion.
On TUESDAY, February 26 at 1:30 PM, we would like to invite all the second grade parents to come as our secondgraders graduate as UNICEF kid AGENTS . They will also be presenting their reports on their Aeta Community investigation during the ceremony.

3D Shape Museum with the Kinder Class
The secondgraders showcased their knowledge on 3D shapes as they built 3D models, made poster displays and brought objects from home for their Shape Museum. The kindergarteners played tourists for the day as they explored the museum . The secondgraders were not only museum builders but great tour guides as well. Overall, it was a fun event ! We really saw that the kids understood the concept of 3D shapes and were able to teach this knowledge to their peers through this activity. Well done !

Dear Grade Two Families,
Let us begin by saying WOW! What an incredible first week back. Everyone was in high spirits and excited to be back. This week we worked very hard at starting the year by making third grade goals and focusing on how to be a “bucket filler”. Both of these will follow the kids all year. We’ll make bi-weekly checkups with students to see how second graders are meeting their third grade goals. As well, each Friday students will get to empty their bucket that their friends have been filling all week. Already the class is full of students trying to help each other, and using kind words to fill up those buckets. It is a wonderful thing to see!
This week in math we’ve started our fraction unit. Already the students know so much about fractions. On Friday they will have a test to show us what they’ve learned.
In Writer’s Workshop students have already begun to write all about books. We have a class of experts who have been writing about everything from Elks in the forest, Trampoline Tricks, to how to play Temple Run. We are excited to learn a lot from your children in this writing unit.
In Social Studies we spent the week exploring culture. We focused on how important it is to respect and explore different cultures. It’s incredible how big our word is and all the cultures it holds. We learned different greetings, different dances, and even different traditions people have around the world. Next week second grade will share their culture to the class. To do this please help them do their BEST work on this weekend’s homework assignment, My Culture Snapshots. That will be a BIG part of their project. Thank you in advance for your time, and cooperation.
Looking forward to another GREAT week in grade two! Enjoy the sun and cool breeze this weekend. It’s perfect picnic weather!

Check Out What's New in Grade 2 This January!
What a great start to the second semester! Everyone has been all smiles and working hard as we begin 2013 together.
This month the second grade is working on a very special project called Bucket Filling. The idea of Bucket Fillers is based on the book "Have You Filled A Bucket Today? (A Guide to Daily Happiness For Kids)" by Carol McCloud.
The premise of the book is this... We all carry an invisible bucket that contains our feelings. When our bucket is full, we feel great. When our bucket is empty, we feel sad. A bucket filler is someone who says or does nice things for other people. By doing this, they are filling other people's buckets and filling their own bucket at the same time.
On the other hand, a bucket dipper says or does things to cause other people to feel bad. A bucket dipper empties their bucket when they say and do mean things.
In our classroom, each child has a bucket on our Bucket Filler bulletin board. Everyone is encouraged to fill the buckets by writing kind words and compliments to each other. At the end of the week, we will empty the buckets and read the nice things our friends left for us when they filled our buckets.
We hope that studentss will continue to practice this at home with their families. Please ask your child different ways they filled people's buckets today. Or better yet let them know how they filled your bucket today.

Hello Everyone!
I hope you all are having a great vacation so far! It must be nice to sleep in and see lots of your family! I know I am really enjoying spending time with my mom, dad, sister, and dog Lucky. Check out this neat Christmas tree they put in the center of my town. It's made out of lobster traps, how clever! I was extremely excited to see snow on Christmas day! I felt so lucky. I haven't played in snow for 3 years!
Just a reminder to write on our class blog each week. I am very curious about the different things you got under your Christmas tree. Already lots of friends have begun to post. The earlier you write the more comments your friends will make on what you wrote. Also on Sunday we will announce the blogger of the week. This person will win an ice cream treat the first day back. YAHOO!!! Remember we're looking for complete sentences and small moment details!
If you have time, check out our Social Studies page. There are lots of fun games and videos to watch that will help you become a GEO pro (remember geo means world). As well we put up all the different things we'll be learning about in 2013! Just looking at it I know it is going to be a VERY exciting year, can't wait! Be sure to check it out.
Have A Great Break!
